Oak Orchard Watershed Protection Alliance

Oak Orchard Watershed Protection Alliance - The Lake Plains RC&D is assisting the Orleans County SWCD and Genesee County SWCD with the formation of the Oak Orchard Watershed Protection Alliance. The kick-off of the watershed planning process began with a Public Meeting August 12, 2004. This watershed level planning effort is the first of its kind in Orleans County. We plan to examine natural resource issues at a watershed scale versus the village, town, or county level. Improved communications between private citizens, local municipalities; and county, state and federal government agencies within the watershed will allow a more comprehensive understanding of the current water uses, future needs, what can be done to enhance the resource. The first environmental planning initiative will be to assist in the development of the “State of the Basin Report”. This report will inventory assets and problems the watershed is facing, and act as the first “stepping stone” to a watershed-wide plan. The anticipated, long-term benefits of developing stakeholder collaboration in the development of the “State of the Basin Report” and future watershed planning efforts, will be the improvement of all water resource values in the Oak Orchard Watershed.

News! On 8/24/05 the Medina Register printed an article on the Oak Orchard Watershed.
