Science, Mathematics, Agriculture,
and Related Technologies (SMART) Center
A proposed regional year round science
education center, focused to teach all aspects of science education
using agriculture and environment issues as the theme.
The SMART Center would be a premier
facility that will be designed as an education center for all
ages.
The SMART Center, under the umbrella of Cornell cooperative
Extension (CCE) of Genesee County, is an educational outreach
program that uses Science, Math, And Related
Technology to foster the awareness and understanding
of agriculture in everyone's lives. Through hands-on educational
programs and interactive exhibits, the Smart Center supports
modern agriculture and the food production system, which is
a major economic and cultural force in our region. The SMART
Center project targets elementary, middle, and high school students
and their families within an eight county area of western New
York. The SMART Center project targets elementary, middle, and
high school students and their families. The SMART Center has
already developed and piloted in (Genesee County) seven school
based curriculums. They are agriculture theme based and are
compatible to current educational learning standards.
Each piece integrates hands-on Science, Math, Technology, and
other needed skills. The Lake Plains RC&D is supporting Genesee
County CCE's efforts to develop SMART Center programs. The Lake
Plains RC&D has provided grant search assistance and grant
writing assistance. The most recent addition to the SMART Center
is pictured above. We want to recognize Pat LaPoint
of Cornell Cooperative Extension Genesee County for her leadership
of this program.
