OAK ORCHARD WATERSHED PROTECTION ALLIANCE

Meeting Notice

THE COMMUNITY IS INVITED TO JOIN THE OAK ORCHARD WATERSHED PROTECTION ALLIANCE

AND PARTCIPATE IN DEVELOPMENT OF THE STATE OF THE BASIN REPORT

September 14, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

At the

Orleans County Soil and Water Conservation District Office

446 West Avenue, Albion, NY 14411

The Oak Orchard Watershed Protection Alliance was established in August of 2004 to guide the development of the State of the Basin Report for the Oak Orchard Watershed. This State of the Basin Report will inventory assets and problems the watershed is facing, and act as the first “stepping stone” to a watershed-wide plan. The water resources within the Oak Orchard allow residents and visitors the ability to utilize water for recreation, economic benefit, and aesthetic enjoyment. The watershed covers a large area, and provides a variety of uses and benefits to the community. The coordinated effort of all stakeholders within the watershed to identify those uses and benefits can only enhance the use and enjoyment for years to come.

The Oak Orchard Watershed Protection Alliance ( Alliance ) is a multi-county effort sponsored by the Genesee and Orleans County Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Since the establishment of the Alliance we have held twelve meetings. Our accomplishments include development of the State of the Basin Report outline and the gathering of comments from the community. We have worked with the County Legislatures in both Genesee and Orleans County on the development and signing of an Intermunicipal Agreement, which has been accomplished. The agreement recognizes the benefits and the need for cooperation from all stakeholders within the watershed, to achieve improved water quality in the Oak Orchard Watershed. We also hired a State University of New York (SUNY) College of Brockport Team to help write the State of the Basin Report for the Oak Orchard Watershed. The SUNY Brockport Consultant Team (seven members) is made up of a talented and diverse group of educators with knowledge and experience in watershed hydrology, Geographic Information Systems, soil science, land use planning, aquatic ecology, water quality, and fish ecology. This group of qualified individuals, along with the members of the Alliance and concerned citizens are striving for the completion of a very successful and informational State of the Basin Report by October of 2005.

We encourage participation from all of the stakeholders in the development of the “ Oak Orchard State of the Basin Report” and future watershed planning efforts. We hope to see you at our next meeting!
